Poppy Seed Roll Recipe
Our homemade poppy seed roll consists of a sweet yeast dough rolled and spread with a poppy seed mixture with oil.
For the dough;
- 2 cups of warm milk,
- 1 tablespoon of dry yeast,
- 1 tablespoon of granulated sugar,
- 2 eggs (separate one of the eggs’ egg yolk),
- 1 cup of vegetable oil,
- 1 coffee spoon of salt,
- 6,5 – 7 cups of all purpose flour (the cup is: 200 ml.).
For the filling;
- 250 grams ground poppy seeds (4-5 tablespoons),
- Almost 1 cup of vegetable oil (not a full cup).
For the top;
- 1 egg yolk.
Process of Poppy Seed Roll Recipe
Firstly, combine the warm milk, dry yeast and sugar in a deep bowl and mix them until the sugar and the yeast dissolve.
Then add vegetable oil, egg and salt and mix.
At the end add the flour slowly and knead the dough.
Get a soft but not a sticky dough.
Cover the dough and leave it to rise for an hour.
For the filling, mix the ground poppy seed and the vegetable oil in a bowl.
Make the dough in 6 pieces and roll them with your hands.
Then roll each of the pieces on a plain surface with the help of a roller. If you want, you can make the pieces long rectangles.
Spread the filling over the surface of the rolled pieces and roll them up.
Then slice them by leaving about 2 cm. borders between each part and place them in to a greased tray by leaving spaces between each pieces.
Before baking, leave the pastries to rise for 15 minutes.
Brush the egg yolk on the poppy seed rolls and bake them in to the preheated oven to 180°C until they get golden brown.
